Learning Mentors - Inspiring Learning Project

What You'll Do:

As a Volunteer Learning Mentor, you will be helping underachieving pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds overcome barriers to learning. Our project's aim is to transform young people’s attitudes towards school, study skills, and help them gain confidence.  It requires your time, commitment, dedication and preparation.

Why You'll Love It:

This is an exciting opportunity to motivate, inspire and empower young people to achieve their full potential. In a short space of time you will notice the change your support is making to the young person's confidence, engagement and educational achievement.

What You'll Learn:

As a volunteer learning mentor you will gain insight and better understanding into the lives of these young people and the multiple barriers they face towards their education. You will be exposed to new and different perspectives. You'll learn how to creatively work with hard to reach young people and their families.

What We're Looking For:

We are looking for volunteers

  • To work with a young person in order to provide support with homework and study skills
  • If the young person is preparing for GCSEs, to provide subject-specific support and assistance with revision and preparation for exams;

  • To work sensitively and appropriately with the young person and their families, being aware of cultural differences, personal boundaries and the power dynamics at work in all mentoring relationships;
  • To undertake induction required for this role
  • After initial introductions, to take responsibility for arranging weekly sessions directly with the young person's family, and letting them know if you are unwell or unable to attend;
  • To report any concerns which might arise straight away to the project worker;
