Formed in 1984, the SGTO is the federation for council housing residents in the London Borough of Southwark. Based in Peckham, we provide a variety of services to residents. These include free practical services, such as printing and account verification for tenant and resident associations (TRAs). We provide advice and support to TRAs, helping residents to set up TRAs but also to govern and manage a TRA on a day-to-day basis. We also organise borough-wide campaigns on issues of importance to residents, and provide research and advice on issues ranging from current public policy to disrepair and overcrowding. We are a membership organisation, made up of council housing residents from across Southwark.
Our free services help TRAs to run effectively and to engage more residents in their activities, helping to create more empowered communities. Our campaigning work helps residents to scrutinise Southwark Council, encouraging the Council to provide more accountable and effective services. Where appropriate, our contributions to regional and national campaigns and consultations ensures that Southwark council housing residents are represented on questions of national importance.
An enthusiasm for empowering communities in decision-making. The ability to learn quickly and to understand issues from multiple points of view.
We are the only remaining borough-level council housing federation remaining in London, giving us a unique, member-led perspective on housing and related issues.
