Opening Doors London
Opening Doors is the only dedicated national charity connecting LGBTQ+ people over 50 with activities, events, support and information. We also provide accredited training to professionals, conduct research and create policy. We work across the UK but retain a focus in London.
ABOUT US:

Opening Doors is the largest UK charity providing activities, events, information and support services specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary or gender fluid (LGBTQ+) people over 50.

We are a membership organisation providing regular social opportunities and events to help develop networks, communities and create friendships for LGBTQ+ people, aged over 50.

We offer a range of specialist groups or services for members.

We also offer specialist training for statutory and voluntary organisations, such as care homes, housing associations and hospitals, to help them understand the needs of older LGBTQ+ people.

Membership is FREE and open to anyone who:

  • Is over 50
  • Identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary, gender-fluid

Members receive a monthly newsletter packed with information and listings for activities and events to help build support, social inclusion and be part of LGBTQ+ life.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Opening Doors is here to support LGBTQ+ people over 50 to live full, vibrant and respected lives free from isolation, loneliness, discrimination and prejudice.

Opening Doors is here to let LGBTQ+ people over 50 know they are not alone.

OUR VALUES:
Opening Doors is committed to being a fully inclusive organisation that represents and serves a wide range of people over 50 who define themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary or gender fluid and related terms. We are an organisation for LGBTQ+ people. The plus signifies that there are numerous definitions and self-descriptions of people who identify with our mission and activities. Self-definition has been a vital aspect of the history of our communities, and the descriptions and acronyms we use will continue to evolve and change over time, as people re-evaluate their identities. As an organisation, we want to reflect the identities and self-descriptions of the communities we serve. This means recognising that the words we use have complex histories and may be contested, while ultimately supporting people's right to self-identify.
THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
Opening Doors is opposed to all manifestations of homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, queerphobia, cissexism and heterosexism, and to all forms of prejudice and discrimination based on age, class, status, race and ethnicity, place of origin, sexuality, gender, marital status, health, religion, ability or disability, employment status, or any form of activity that results in social exclusion, personal vulnerability or harm. We are committed to the achievement of full human rights and social justice for all LGBTQ+ people.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

We are looking for people with a range of skills for various volunteering roles.  But as importantly we are looking for LGBTQ+ identified people or strong allies who are committed to supporting people over 50 who are also LGBTQ+, and who share our commitment to intersectional inclusivity.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

We are an inclusive LGBTQ+ led charity, working on behalf of LGBTQ+ people over 50.  We care for all in our community...
