Salusbury World Refugee Centre
Salusbury World’s mission is to support refugee and migrant children and families in Brent to develop the skills and confidence to navigate and succeed in society, and to feel supported and hopeful for the future.
ABOUT US:

We are a small, pioneering refugee support charity based in Brent. We provide unique educational, social and practical support for children, young people and parents in a safe trusted environment.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

We support some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in London. The schools and Family Wellbeing Centres we operate our services from are in areas of high deprivation with high migrant populations. Research in one partner school in 2017 revealed that new migrant students felt scared and unsupported. Teachers said students needed care as well as individualised support and that they did not have the time or resources to provide it routinely. None of the parents in the families we assist have been through the English school system, making it difficult for them to support their children’s education. With the help of our team of volunteers, we can provide the support that is needed for children to thrive.

OUR VALUES:
compassion
respect
OUR AWARDS:
LSE Voluntary Organisation of the Year 2020
THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
in 2019/20, our work reached 850 young people and adults
82% of children in our mentoring programme felt more settled in school and told us that their confidence increased over the year. Observations from teachers confirmed that the majority participated more in class.
53 children told us that they felt less isolated
56% of mentees said mentoring had helped them make supportive friendships in school
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

We look for volunteers who are friendly, warm, reliable and caring, with a good level of fluency in English

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

Our work is thoughtful, joined-up, practical and determined.  Our aim is not simply to resolve one practical issue as presented, but to get to know every individual adult, child and family and support them to recover control of their lives and plan for a fulfilling, enjoyable future.
