Shelter
Home is a human right. It's our foundation and it's where we thrive. Yet, every day millions of people are being devastated by the housing emergency. We exist to defend the right to a safe home. Because home is everything.
ABOUT US:

Shelter is a housing and homelessness charity that offers specialist 1:1 legal advice and advocacy for those suffering under the housing emergency as well as campaigning for housing justice. We work in communities to understand the problem and change the system. We also run national campaigns to fight for change at the top. We carry out ground-breaking research to understand the UK’s housing problems and develop policies to solve them.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Our research, experience and the evidence we’ve gathered since 2019 mean we have a greater understanding of the scale, nature and impact of the housing emergency. The housing system right now is unaffordable, unfit, unstable and discriminatory. As a result, the situation is a national emergency.

Our research, Denied the Right to a Safe Home, shows that

  • 17.5 million people are trapped by the housing emergency
  • Over 109,000 householdsare living in temporary accommodation
  • 1 in 5 renters say their home is damaging their mental or physical health
