Step Out Mentoring
Helping children and young people re-connect with their communities by providing 1:1 outdoor based mentoring sessions in South London. Encouraging them to thrive and become positive change makers in their community.
ABOUT US:

Step-Out Mentoring is an early intervention mentoring organisation that provides support for children and young people in the heart of Southwark through outdoor based 1:1 mentoring and group workshops. We work with young people aged 8-18 who are disengaged with education and/or life.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Our vision is to see children and young people supported through tough times and empowered with the skills and emotional resilience to thrive in life and play positive roles in their communities. Our purpose is to support children and young people who have been struggling with mental health issues in the shadow of Covid-19. These young people will have been struggling with complex issues exacerbated by the pandemic, and so a safe outdoor based program opens opportunity to re-build resilience and confidence, as well as helping them to re-engage with their families, school and wider communities.

OUR VALUES:
Collaboration
Affirmation
Respect
THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
Seeing young people reconnected to their communities
Empowering local volunteers to connect and support young people in their communities
Providing mentors for over 50 young people in Southwark over the last two years
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

We look for people who are kind, caring, good listeners, communicative and empathetic who are willing to commit to 12 months meeting up with their mentee. We ask mentors to be open to trying new activities, sports and foods. No experience is necessary as we provide them with all the training and carry out background checks prior to introducing them to their potential mentee.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

At Step Out Mentoring we have built a community of like-minded individuals who want to support young people and their families. Through our workshops, 1:1 mentoring and residential trips we see how the young people interact with each other and help in building those long-lasting healthy friendships.

The mentoring allows the young person to find a responsible adult (who they probably would never connect with organically) in their community should they feel the need to talk about things worrying them and the volunteers and staff build that safe haven for these young people.

All volunteers are supported throughout their mentoring journey by a mentoring coordinator. Training is offered throughout the year on topics that may help the mentor connect and understand their young person more like neurodiversity training and mental health training.
