Imperial War Museums
IWM was founded in the midst of the First World War with a mission to preserve and tell the stories of all kinds of people, not only from Britain but from the countries of its empire. And we continue to do this work right up to present day conflict, covering 100 years of experience throughout the Commonwealth. As well as our permanent displays, we have a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, events and educational activities to help our visitors to get close to the lives of those affected by war and to develop a deeper understanding of its effect on the world.
ABOUT US:

Join our team of over 1,000 volunteers across our five sites. Our volunteers help bring to life the stories of our collections, promote great visitor experience and care for our many significant objects.

You don’t have to be a history buff, just enjoy getting involved and support our mission in telling the stories that matter.

We value diversity and encourage volunteers from all sections of the community.

Our opportunities are designed to be meaningful and enjoyable; we want to ensure you can give as much or as little as you like to our cause.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

We are partly funded by government but also need volunteers, donations, sponsorship and income from our shops and commercial activities to sustain our work.

IWM is a global authority on conflict and its impact on people’s lives. Our world-leading collection and historically important sites help us tell extraordinary human stories in the most powerful way possible.

IWM is a charity. We are partly funded by the government but rely on the support of our members, volunteers and donors, as well as income from retail and other commercial activities to carry on our work.

Discover how you can support IWM and help us continue to tell the stories that deserve to be heard.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

Our vision is to remain a leader in developing and communicating a deeper understanding of the causes, course, and consequences of war. Using the personal stories and experiences in our unique collections, our objective is to challenge people of all ages to look at war and conflict from different perspectives.
