After-school Club Volunteer

Supporting and encouraging Primary School children to take part in activities and make new friends. Volunteers assist with organising materials, supervising children, and participating in creative/sporting activities.

What You'll Do:
  • To support and encourage children in play and creative activities
  • To offer academic support and encouragement to children with their homework, working in small groups of 2 to 3 children per volunteer
  • To work with students aged from 6 to 11, from countries such as India, Romania, Syria, Afghanistan and Bulgaria with varying levels of English
  • To provide general support to improve students' reading, writing and spoken English.
  • To help prepare the space where the children will play
  • To help prepare drinks and snacks
Why You'll Love It:
  • You will have the satisfaction of knowing you have made a huge difference to the life of a young refugee.
  • You will be playing an important role in supporting newly-arrived children to settle into school, gain confidence and achieve their full potential.
  • Our volunteers tell us that they find the role fulfilling and enjoyable.
What You'll Learn:
  • You will learn listening and communication skills - many of our mentees have poor spoken and written English.
  • You will receive training from us in the role and in the context of the refugee experience, as well as safeguarding training.
What We're Looking For:

We believe a good After-school Club volunteer needs:

  • A warm personality and a good sense of humour.
  • A sensitivity to other cultures and an ability to communicate successfully across cultures.
  • General awareness of study skills and problem solving approaches.
  • Reliability, patience and flexibility.
  • An ability to build good rapport with children.
  • A commitment to equality & diversity and the rights of all individuals to respect and fair treatment.
  • Willingness and ability to share skills and knowledge with the children.
  • Confidence to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • High standard of English language (spoken, written and reading).
  • A non judgemental and supportive approach and belief in the potential of others.

Crossbones is a stone's throw away from London Bridge and was boarded up and closed for many years. Behind the hoardings is a post-medieval, un-consecrated pauper’s burial ground with the remains of an estimated 15,000 people buried there.
