The Orwell Festival of Political Writing - Event Volunteers

What You'll Do:

The Orwell Foundation is looking for volunteers to support its inaugural Orwell Festival of Political Writing, a series of events from 22nd June to 14 July celebrating this year's finalists, and special guests, of The Orwell Prizes 2022. Volunteers will support event preparation, managing the guest lists, wayfinding, microphone handling, and clear up.

We are looking for one to two volunteers for each of the following events:

  • 22nd June, 6pm - 9pm - The Orwell Festival Lecture: Rebecca Solnit on Orwell & Nature (Conway Hall).
  • 23rd June, 6pm - 9pm - 'Bismarck and Political Power' with Dominic Cummings, Richard Evans, Gideon Rachman, and Katja Hoyer (UCL).
  • 27th June, 6pm - 9pm - 'Uncommon Wealth' with Kojo Koram and Grace Blakeley (UCL).
  • 4th July, 5.15pm - 8pm - Chris Patten on his Hong Kong Diaries (UCL)
  • 5th July, 6pm - 9pm - 'What is England? Who are we Now?' with Jason Cowley (UCL)
  • 6th July, 5.30pm - 8.30pm - Ali Smith on her Seasonal Quartet (UCL)
  • 7th July, 5.30pm - 8.30pm - 'The Coming Storm' with Gabreil Gatehouse and Lucy Proctor (UCL)
  • 8th July, 5.30pm - 8.30pm - George Monbiot on his shortlisted pieces (UCL)
  • 12th July, 6pm - 9pm - 'Appliance' with J.O. Morgan in conversation with Dennis Duncan (UCL)
  • 12th July, 5.30pm - 8.30pm - 'Crackdown on Dissent' with Ali Fowle, Polina Ivanova, and Michela Wrong (UCL)
Why You'll Love It:

You will have the opportunity to attend events for free with some of the most important writers and commentators in contemporary politics, and be given real responsibiltiy with managing an event.

What You'll Learn:

You will learn how literary events are run and gain an insight into how events are managed. You will laso learn how to prioritise certain tasks in a pressured environment.

What We're Looking For:

Although experience running events is preferable, you do not have to have experience to volunteer. You do not need to be available for the entire duration of the festival and can pick the events that are convenient for you. We are looking for people who are proactive, have excellent communication skills, and can multitask in a pressured environemnt.
