Campaign and Research Intern
Role Summary
We are looking for a volunteer to support our campaign and research work. We are open to applicants from all backgrounds and degrees.
The role will involve:
- Researching local and national issues and policy developments that affect council housing and council housing tenants.
- keeping abreast of fast-moving developments within Southwark, particularly in relation to Estate redevelopment and housebuilding.
- Using your research to produce briefings for residents, and for creating submissions to relevant reports and publications.
- Surveying our membership to see what issues they would like us to campaign on.
- Creating campaign proposals for the team to consider and act on.
- Helping in the organisation of meetings/round table discussions with local residents, council officials and, if relevant, parliamentarians.
You will be working with a small friendly staff team if you are coming to the office. You will be required to attend an in-person induction in the office, but after this point we will discuss with you what your preferences are in terms of in-person vs. home working.

- Get to know tenants and resident's issues and how different policies can be applied to different cases.
- Your expenses will be reimbursed.
- Paid role may be considered whenever opportunity arises and you are interested in the role.
- You will receive an induction to your role and volunteering at the SGTO generally. We are constantly looking out for external training opportunities, so please let us know if there are any training programmes you think we should apply to.
The following skills and interests are essential:
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Research skills, including the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
- IT Skills – including the ability to use Microsoft Office
- Social Media skills – including being able to promote events and projects on Facebook, Twitter and other appropriate platforms
- An interest in one or more of the following: council housing, community campaigning, public policy
- Some kind of knowledge of, or connection to, the borough of Southwark is desirable but not essential.
