Assistant ESOL Teacher for Children & Young People

Join IRMO as Assistant ESOL Teacher to support recently arrived Children & Young People in the UK. If you have a passion for ESOL, speak English and Spanish/Portuguese and can spare a few hours in the afternoon, get in touch!

What You'll Do:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Volunteer Assistant ESOL Teacher who is fluent in English and Spanish or Portuguese and who has some experience in working with children and young people. The role aims to support IRMO’s weekly ESOL classes for Spanish/Portuguese speaking children and young people who have recently migrated to the UK. The post-holder will assist the ESOL Teacher with the delivery of creative and interactive ESOL classes for up to 8-10 children:

  • aged 5-7 years old OR 8-12 years old on Monday or Wednesday afternoons
  • a beginners ESOL class for 13-19 year olds on Tuesday afternoons

Classes take place at our centre in Brixton and have fixed hours so it’s essential that the volunteer is free on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons between 16:00-19:00.

Some children/young people on the project are still waiting to start school in the UK and coming to IRMO is often the only time in the week they have fun and learn with peers their age.

The overall aims of IRMO’s ESOL program are to equip children with the English Language skills they need to: thrive and integrate more easily into their new schools; reach their full potential; make new friends; feel part of the wider English-speaking community; and rebuild their lives in the UK.

The ideal Volunteer Assistant ESOL Teacher is a fluent Spanish or Portuguese & English speaker, with a passion for ESOL and who has an idea of the challenges faced by migrant, refugee & asylum seeking children and young people in the UK.
