Digital Skills

Help local charity tackle the digital gap facing the elderly population of Fulham.

What You'll Do:

Digital Skills Volunteer needed for Charity in Fulham!

What is the Volunteer Role?

Role description

  • Provide digital and IT support for older people who wish to learn or improve their skills in using new technology.
  • Empower an older person to use the Internet and technology by supporting their knowledge and self-confidence, thus improving their overall well-being, helping them maintain their independence and aiming to reduce isolation and loneliness.
  • Tasks include:
    • Explain and demonstrate how to use laptops, tablets, smartphones.
    • Create email accounts and enable beneficiaries to use them.
    • Support beneficiaries to use social media, Skype, WhatsApp etc. to connect with friends and loved ones.
    • Explore online shopping opportunities and how to use various platforms. Discuss online banking and/or how to pay bills online.
    • Explore how to find medical information and/or book GP appointments online. Show beneficiaries how to research social activities and local services.
    • Demonstrate how to use calendars and/or set up helpful reminders.
    • Explain how to research organisations (like trusted traders, builders, etc) and find out what other people are saying about them.
  • The role is flexible and involves providing digital support in-person on a one-to-one basis but also remote support via phone or remote support platforms.

What impact will this have?

  • Your support will empower an older person to use the Internet and technology by supporting their knowledge and self-confidence.
  • You will help improving an older person's overall well-being, helping them maintain their independence and reduce isolation.
  • Your support will make a positive difference to an older person's quality of life.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will be required to supply two references, one being your current or most recent employer.
  • For this role we will consider your availability and aim to be as flexible as possible. The length of visits/calls will vary with each client. Visits could take place weekly or could be on a one-off basis.
  • You will be reporting to Fulham Good Neighbours main office, but you will conduct one to one support visits at the beneficiaries’ home or remotely over the phone. Note that remote tech support over the phone might be used when the circumstances do not allow for one-to-one visits. Remote Digital Skills Volunteer Guidance will be provided when this is the case.
  • We are closely following the Government guidelines around Covid-19. We also ask all visitors to Rosaline Hall and all home visitors to continue to wear a face mask, to sanitise hands regularly and to socially distance. We have a Risk Assessment in place specific to this role to provide further guidance and support for our volunteers.

Expenses

  • We would cover your travel expenses connected to your volunteering role and lunch expenses if you volunteer for over 3.5 hours on any given date.

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required.
